Abstract

————————————

Therelationship between biodiversity and Ecosystem Functioning (BEF) remains hotlydebated for four decades. BEF research was initially dominated by boththeoretical and experimental  studies. Most of his BEF studies have focused on multiple metrics of taxonomic, functional trait, phylogenetic and stand structural diversity, functionalidentity, disturbance, and environmental factors for predicting ecosystemfunctioning and processes. Although biodiversity generally promotes ecosystemfunctioning, this relationship is strongly context-dependent. Thus, to promoteecosystem functions that underpin human well‐being, conservation should notonly promote biodiversity, but also the abiotic conditions favouringspecies with suitable trait combinations.

Speaker's Bio

————————————

DrArshad Ali currently works at South China Normal University, as a DistinguishedAssociate/ Postdoctoral Researcher. He is the Editor of Forestry: AnInternational Journal of Forest Research, and Journal of Forestry Researchpublished by Oxford University Press and Springer, respectively. Having lessthan 5-year of an academic career, he has published over 40 scientific papers. He is interested in a better understanding of the consequences of increasingdisturbances, biodiversity loss and climate change on ecosystem function. Hestrives to contribute to the societal decision-making process in ways to assurethe ecological sustainability of natural and managed plant ecosystems in achanging environment. Plant functional traits, demography and tree sizesvariations across space and time, as well as across biomes, are the maincharacteristics of his research.
