  • Tsinghua-Berkeley Shenzhen Institute(TBSI) is jointly established by Tsinghua University and University of California, Berkeley under the support of the Shenzhen Municipal Government. It is committed to exploring the cultivation mode in 'university-government-enterprise tripartite cooperation with the concept of 'interdisciplinary', 'internationalization' and 'industrial partnership'. With integration of university, government and industry resources, training global technology leaders and future entrepreneurs, TBSI aimed to solve regional and global major issues of engineering and scientific research to provide high-quality talent.

In September 2014, Tsinghua University, University of California, Berkeley and the Shenzhen Municipal Government announced the joint establishment of Tsinghua-Berkeley Shenzhen Institute (TBSI) in Shenzhen. TBSI was officially inaugurated at Nanshan i-Park in Shenzhen on October 20, 2015.

In the early years (2015-2021), TBSI will be global economic and social developmental oriented, keep close connection with the development needs of Shenzhen and set up three major interdisciplinary research centers and 18 laboratories for environmental sciences and new energy technologies, data science and information technology, precision medicine and public health. Currently, TBSI has entered the second phase cooperation (2022-2025), focus on the research direction of data science and information technology, with smart city as the theme, build an international and innovative talents education and research system with the integration of two high-quality scientific research and educational resources, actively respond to and solve the regional and global problems facing major scientific and technological issues and social development. TBSI is located at Tsinghua Shenzhen International Graduate School and Nanshan i-Park in Shenzhen. Research and teaching work are carried out in both campuses of Shenzhen and University of California, Berkeley.

TBSI will recruit the best teachers from all over the world to build a world-leading faculty team. At the same time, TBSI will invite industry mentors, carry out scientific research and production & research cooperation, and establish collaborative innovation international system especially around the strategic emerging industries for injecting international elements into the integrated innovation ecosystem in Shenzhen and China.

TBSI aims to select the outstanding students around the world, provide students with a superior research environment and encourage students to develop innovative thinking and creativity in an interdisciplinary and international atmosphere. Under the joint guidance of professors from both two universities and industry supervisors, graduate students will gain precious experience by learning and growing together with students with diverse cultural backgrounds in both Tsinghua University and University of California, Berkeley, and will develop their creative, innovative and entrepreneurial ability on the “society-university” multiple collaborative, interdisciplinary “grand cross platform”.

  • Establish an ecosystem for transformational technology research addressing global challenges in environmental science and new energy technology, precision medicine and healthcare, and data science and information technology. Build trans-disciplinary innovative research platforms and graduate curricula. Foster future entrepreneurs and leaders in science and technology.

  • The vision of TBSI is to build a world-class transformative research and education partnership to fuel economic growth with accelerated innovation through transdisciplinary and translational research.
