PROFESSIONAL BIOGRAPHY

Prof. Hongbin Sun is Chang Jiang ScholarProfessor of Electrical Engineering, head of Smart Grid Energy ManagementResearch Group, and the deputy director of the Academic Affair Office, TsinghuaUniversity. Prof. Sun is the co-author of over 280 peer-reviewed papers and 4books. He held over 60 patents in China, one patent in USA and one patent inEurope.

He is currently IEEE senior member and IETFellow. He also serves as the editor of the IEEE Transactions on Smart Grid, and a member of the Editorial Board of four international journals and twoChinese journals.

Prof. Sun has worked with industry for thelast 18 years on electric power system operation and control issues withspecific interests in the smart grids, renewable energy resource integration, electrical vehicle to power grid, demand response and energy storage. He hasbeen awarded over ¥80M research grants as the principal investigator onelectrical grid modernization issues. He is the principal investigator for anon-going MOST-sponsored 973 program which studies the next generation of EnergyManagement System (EMS) for smart grids.

He is also the principal investigator forseveral ongoing international collaborative projects on smart grid operationand control, such as Tsinghua-Berkeley joint research fund and China-UK JointResearch Fund (NSFC-RCUK_EPSRC). In recent 15 years, he led a research group atTsinghua University to develop an energy management system (EMS), “the brain ofpower grid”, which has been applied to over 70 electrical power control centersin China.

He also has developed a system-wideautomatic voltage control system (AVC), which has been put into operation in 5regional power grids (5/6 of total China), 20 provincial power grids (2/3 oftotal China), 6 wind farm bases (3/4 of total China) and more than 60large-scale wind farms. Until the end of 2013, there have been 540 large-scalepower plants to be controlled by the innovative AVC, with the generationcapacity of 508GW, which is about 50% of the total installed generationcapacity in China. The innovative AVC has also been implemented in PJM, thelargest regional power grid in North America covering 13 states includingWashington DC, to pursue a balance result of security and economy for the PJMgrid in USA.
