Professor Xiaoping Zhang and Associate Professor Shao-Lun Huang participated in the 2022 IEEE East Asian School of Information Theory


The 2022 IEEE East Asian School of Information Theory (IEEE EASIT 2022) took place from August 2nd to 5th at the Shenzhen Institute for Talents Development. The four-day summer school brought together 107 graduate students from across East Asia; fifty-one participated offline. During the program, students attended eight tutorials delivered by expert scientists across different fields including information theory and machine learning.

IEEE EASIT 2022 was co-hosted by IEEE Information Theory Society Guangzhou Chapter, Tsinghua SIGS, Sun Yat-sen University, and The Chinese University of Hong Kong (Shenzhen). This year was the first time the program was hosted in China. Tutorials were delivered by scholars and industry professionals from MIT, University of Maryland, University of Pennsylvania, Texas A&M University, Georgia Institute of Technology, Bilkent University, University of New South Wales, and Southwest Jiaotong University. Teachers and students from universities including Tsinghua University, Fudan University, The Chinese University of Hong Kong (Shenzhen), National University of Singapore, Sun Yat-sen University, Nankai University, Southern University of Science and Technology, and Shenzhen University participated in the summer school online and offline.

The summer school officially opened on the morning of August 2nd. Xiaoping Zhang, Professor of TBSI and Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Engineering, Li Chen, Professor of Sun Yat-sen University and co-chairman of the Summer School, as well as Mengyao Ma, technical expert of Huawei Technologies Co., LTD., delivered speeches at the opening ceremony respectively. Prof. Zhang and Prof. Chen firstly congratulated on the successful opening of the Summer School, expressed their thanks to the co-organizers and sponsors, and warmly welcomed the guests and students who came to attend the Summer School. Dr. Ma emphasized the importance of information theory in 6G communication, storage, artificial intelligence and other related fields. Shao-Lun Huang, co-chair of the Summer School and TBSI Associate Professor, presided over the Summer School activities.

During the Summer School, Associate Professor Shirin Saeedi Ridokhti from University of Pennsylvania, Professor Erdal Arikan from Bilkent University, Professor Alexander Barg from University of Maryland, Professor Xiaohu Tang from Xi’an Jiaotong University, Professor Lizhong Zheng from Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Professor Yao Xie from Georgia Institute of Technology, Professor Tie Liu from Texas A&M University, and Professor Jinhong Yuan from the University of New South Wales respectively introduced the following topics: the algorithm and theoretical progress of neural network compression, the application of polarization code transmission reaching the magnitude of Tb per second, the main problems in distributed memory system coding, and the repair of high code rate Maximum Distance Separable (MDS), basic systems of Information geometry analysis and how to understand deep learning from the perspective of Information geometry, new advances in modern hypothesis testing, clustering and generalization in statistical data analysis and learning theory, Partially Information Coupled (PIC) and Partially parity-coupled codes (PPC), et al..

Sixty students submitted posters to the summer school. Li Guodong from SIGS was among the recipients of the best student poster award.
