TBSI Prof. Fu Hongyan’s Group won the Best Poster Award at the Asian Communications and Photonics Conference

2019-11-07

From November 2nd to November 5th it hasbeen successfully held in Chengdu, China, the 2019 edition of the AsiaCommunications & Photonics Conference, where Alberto Pepe, student of theNano-Devices Lab of the Tsinghua-Berkeley Shenzhen Institute was awarded withthe Best Poster Award. The paper he first-authored and presented, titled"Modulation Format Recognition and Optical Signal-to-Noise RatioMonitoring for Cognitive Optical Wireless Communications", has been thefruit of the cooperation with other two master students, Wei Zixian and Xin Liuand of the guidance of Prof. Freddy Fu.

Asia Communications and Photonics Conference, held annually since 2001, is the largest conference in the Asia-Pacific regionon optical communication and photonics, and it is sponsored by OSA, SPIE and IEEE Photonics Society.

Optical Wireless Communications represent agreen, cost effective technology compared to standard Wi-Fi that will increasedata-rate and bandwith for next generation connectivity services. However, light signals suffer from scattering and reflections much more than radiofrequency ones. Alberto Pepe's work aims at verifying learning-based,'smart' transceivers able to improve therobustness of these optical links affected by multipath fading even in the casein which the adopted equalization scheme would fail. This award is the resultof a long-term effort by Professor Freddy Fu and his research team, as well asa recognition of the team's research and academic level.
