Tsinghua SIGS Holds Opening Ceremony for Incoming Graduate Students

In the morning of August 21, the Opening Ceremony for incoming graduate students of Tsinghua SIGS Class of 2019 was held in Shenzhen University Town Sports Center. Leaders of SIGS, including Gao Hong, Kang Feiyu, Wu Xiaofeng etc., leaders of Tsinghua-Berkeley Shenzhen Institute, as well as Liu Ying, the director of the Management Office of the University Town of Shenzhen attended the ceremony.

Gao Hong delivers a speech

Gao Hong, Executive Dean of SIGS, delivered a speech at the Opening Ceremony. In her speech, Gao Hong introduced the foundation and development blueprint of SIGS, and highlighted the three key features of the school: "International, Borderless, Entrepreneurial". Gao Hong expressed her three wishes for freshmen: that students can care for national development as well as the fate of mankind, master the abilities of learning, working and getting along well with others effectively in the international and diversified environment, that is the "global competence"; she wishes that students can step out routines and conduct cross-field thinking and innovation and keep the curiosity and the habit of lifelong learning; she wishes that students can be honest and trustworthy, stick to the academic morality, abide by professional ethic, advocate science, pursue truth and be disciplined.

And then teachers and students watched the online streaming of  the Opening Ceremony for Graduate Students of the Class of 2019 of Tsinghua University, which was held in Beijing and carefully listened to the "first class for freshmen" of President Qiu Yong.

1164 graduate students were enrolled by Tsinghua SIGS in 2019. Wherein, candidates for a master's degree accounted for 85%, and candidates for a doctor's degree accounted for 15%. People who attended the Opening Ceremony also included the first batch (this year) of 41 freshmen of the Doctor Project of Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area Innovation Leading Engineering.
