The Oversight Committee of Tsinghua-Berkeley Shenzhen Institute Held the First Meeting

The first Oversight Committee meeting of Tsinghua-Berkeley Shenzhen Institute (TBSI) was held on February 12, 2015 8:00-9:30 (China time) via three-party videoconference, between the UC Berkeley Chancellor’s office, the Tsinghua Beijing Headquarter’s Office, and the Shenzhen Municipal Government Building.  The meeting was co-chaired by Xu CHEN, Chairperson of the Tsinghua University Council, Nicholas Dirks, Chancellor of the University of California, Berkeley and Qin XU, Mayor of the Shenzhen Municipal Government. Bin YANG, Vice President of Tsinghua University; Feiyu KANG, Dean of the Tsinghua Graduate School at Shenzhen; Shishan JI; Director of the Research Institute of Tsinghua University at Shenzhen; Lin ZHANG, Vice Dean of the Tsinghua Graduate School at Shenzhen; Graham Fleming, Vice Chancellor for Research of the University of California, Berkeley; Andrew Szeri, Vice Provost for Strategic Academic and Facilities Planning of the University of California, Berkeley; Connie Chang-Hasnain, Associate Dean of the College of Engineering at the University of California, Berkeley; Anthony St. George, Assistant Dean of the College of Engineering at the University of California, Berkeley; Yurong GUO, Director of the Shenzhen Education Bureau; and Jian LU, Director of the Shenzhen Science and Technology Innovation Council all participated in the meeting.  The meeting was coordinated by Lin ZHANG and Anthony St. George.

The committee approved the nomination of the Academic Advisory Committee,the Co-Directors, Co-Associate directors of TBSI, and the research centers.  The TBSI start-up phase financial budget was also reviewed and approved.  The committee also recommended the TBSI Co-Directors and the legal departments of UC Berkeley and Tsinghua University to accelerate the negotiation and drafting of the formal legal agreement and initiate the registration of TBSI legal entity in China.
