Vagus Nerve Stimulation(VNS) and Deep Brain Stimulation(DBS) is usually performed to treat epilepsy with electrodes permanently implanted in patients while the stimulators deliver electrical impulses continuously and independently of any feedback (open-loop stimulation). Conversely, in close-loop neuromodulation, electrical stimulation is delivered as a function of patients’ physiological signals. There is an emerging development of close-loop VNS and DBS in the personalized treatment of epilepsy for this purpose. In this talk, Dr. Yuan Yuan will review the various developments in the use of electrophysiological feedback signals, including EEG, ECG and CAP in close-loop VNS and DBS therapies which might offer substantial clinical benefits for epilepsy patients.
Yuan Yuan, received her Ph.D. degree in biomedical engineering from Tsinghua University, Beijing in 2016, after which she joined Postdoctoral in the Precision Medicine and Healthcare Research Center, Tsinghua-Berkeley Shenzhen Institute, supervised by Pro. Luming Li . She has exceptionally experienced and proficient in her specialized area, including close-loop VNS，new indications of VNS therapy, mechanical and electrical characteristics of the interface between stimulation electrode and peripheral nerve, and implantable electrode design for peripheral stimulation.
