Photonics is the physical science of light (photon) generation, detection, and manipulation through emission, transmission, modulation, signal processing, switching, amplification, and detection/sensing, etc. This course mainly covers basic optics, interactions between light and materials, laser fundamentals, waveguide theory, semiconductor devices, optical modulation & detection, as well as nonlinear optics. Photonics advances together with other information technologies, making it one of the fundamentals of today’s modern information technology.
