Smart cites with augmented ICT have been evolving into sophisticated systems of assembling and processing massive amount of information on multifaceted dimensions of cities, providing various types of high-quality products and services. As a complex and diverse “hardware+software” mixture, however, the city has a variety of approaches to implementing the concept of smart cities in practice, with unique diversity in terms of the knowledge, actors, and institutions involved based on local conditions. During the talk, the smart city innovation systems in Japan, U.S., and China will be depicted and compared, in terms of energy sectors, transportation sectors, ICT technologies, their origins of innovation drives and also their unique business integration from large organizations to start-ups, etc.
Prof. Masaru YARIME is Associate Professor at the Division of Public Policy in the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. He also has appointments as Honorary Reader at the Department of Science, Technology, Engineering and Public Policy in University College London, Visiting Associate Professor at the Graduate School of Public Policy in the University of Tokyo, and Visiting Scholar at the Japan International Cooperation Agency Research Institute. He has been awarded Abe Fellowship by the Social Science Research Council of the United States. His research interests center around science, technology, and innovation policy for energy, environment, and sustainability and has contributed to many international initiatives and editorial broads of renounced journals, including the United Nations Environment Programme Finance Initiative on Environmental Risk Integration in Sovereign Credit Analysis, Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change Working Group III Fifth Assessment Report, and the Expert Group on Policy Support Tools and Methodologies of the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services. (http://yarime.net/). Dr. Takuro KOBASHI is a Senior Researcher in Japan Renewable Energy Institute. His research interests are on climate change and sustainability, EV and its roles on decarbonizing societies. He also has working experience in World Bank, IGES, and NIPR.
